Holiday Dining Options in Nagoya

November 21, 2018

Nagoya has very good food, and there are a lot of options available to you on a day to day basis.  At holiday time however, you may need some hints on where to go to get your fill of holiday tastes and treats.  There is no cause for alarm, however, we have you covered with a few options to weigh.

The Coat of Arms

The Coat of Arms is Nagoya’s first Commonwealth Pub and Restaurant, and is once again serving up their traditional Christmas dinner. You can choose from either turkey or ham, both of which comes with all of the fixings you might expect, including rosemary roasted potatoes, vegetables, green peas and, with this being a commonwealth bar, they will be adding Yorkshire puddings. Advanced booking gets you a free glass of wine for each guest.

Hilton Hotel Nagoya

The Hilton Hotel’s Christmas Special Buffet at The Terrace will feature a savory all-you-can-eat steak and lobster at lunchtime, as well as roast turkey, pecan pie, hot apple wine, and other festive treats to get into the Christmas spirit.

If you pop in for dinner, or are just in the neighborhood, the Hilton Nagoya’s Famous Christmas Train is once again in operation, and all donated  proceeds from the train will go to Santa and Friends Nagoya.  For that alone, they make my list!  SFN is a charity dedicated to enriching the lives of orphans in the Nagoya area.

The Kawabun Nagoya

This year the Kawabun Nagoya will offer a Christmas course from December 22 to 25.  They invite you to join with family and friends, small children welcome. While the course is not exactly the most traditional of dishes, with wagyu beef and truffles, fish carpaccio, and squid ink tagliolini on the menu, it still promises to be pretty fantastic.

Shooters

Nagoya’s favorite American sports bar, Shooters, will be offering a slap-up christmas dinner from December 23 to 25. You can choose from turkey or beef, or have a bit of both, and each dish comes with roasted vegetables, stuffing, mashed potatoes and of course cranberry sauce. If you want to do your dinner at home you can get a whole roast turkey to take away.

Midtown BBQ

You may not necessarily think of barbecue as a Christmas dish, but Midtown BBQ will make you reconsider that standpoint. This year they will, from December 22 to 25, be putting on their ‘Smoked Prime Rib Christmas’ dish, with all the trimmings. If ‘with all the trimmings’ sounds a little vague, that’s because, at the time of going to print, they have yet to fully decide the menu. However, they do say, and I quote, “it will be a nicely loaded dinner plate”, so it’ll be worth getting in contact with them closer to the time.

Buying Holiday Foods in Japan

Foreign Buyers Club – “Food and Fun from Home”

The Foreign Buyers Club started a co-op in the late 1980s importing items their friends missed most; bagels, breakfast cereal and peanut butter. Now the Foreign Buyers Club is an icon of the foreign community in Japan.  Billed as “Food and Fun from home – direct to your door – anywhere in Japan;” this online international grocery store has been delivering the goods to the broader expat community in Japan since 1988.
